I enjoy speaking about my love of writing. Visits include the story behind the Fables series which began as a friendship in the first grade and made a dream come true! Students and teachers are also treated to soon-to-be published stories. When I speak to students, I ask them to guess my day job. Many answer "speaker" or "teacher." They are surprised when I tell them I'm a judge during the day and a writer at night. It's important for students to realize that a person can have different careers, even at the same time! Award-winning illustrator Kathleen Wong Bishop is a popular speaker and has taught thousands of children the art of illustration. She illustrates books written by her childhood friend Leslie Ann Hayashi. When Leslie was seven years old she saw a picture drawn by Kathleen and she said, "I'm going to write a book and you're going to do the illustrations." Decades later that dream came true. Kathleen didn't know how to paint when Leslie asked her to illustrate. But when a friend asks you to help, you can't let them down. With hard work and perseverance, they've produced books that teach morals and help children learn about the beauty and wonders of nature. Kathleen's inspiring talk reveals:
"Thanks for sharing your paintings, ideas and the wonderful stories behind all of them! You were very entertaining and engaging. It's a delight to have someone so in tune with their audience and able to relate. The students continue to discuss things from your talk. We look forward to more illustrations and stories from you!" Ms. Wilson
"My sincere thanks for your wonderful presentation! You never fail to engage the children. I will continue to ask you to speak every year!" Ms. Krebs
"Thanks for visiting our school. I loved the glamorous dragonfly. It made me feel cheerful. The crab race was very comical because you used a witty puppet. I hope I can be an artist like you when I grow up." Alyssa
"My class was fascinated by your paintings and stories. You did an excellent job of taking us through the process of making and illustrating a book....the amount of research and rough drafts needed. You moved at a good pace and kept our interest. The transparencies and art added much. My class is eager to read more of your stories and try the watercolor techniques you taught. Tomorrow we begin writing and illustrating our own fables!" Ms. Raney To arrange a visit, contact Kathy.
